Note from Elisabeth

camp millionaire canada

If you read last week's ezine, you know I was in the Caribbean on an internet marketing cruise. And if you're involved in doing business on the internet, I invite you to come with me next year. I'll be sending you all info in a bit. It was amazing. Connections, learning, connections, learning and did I mention connections? You get the idea.

I got off the ship last Friday and immediately flew from the Caribbean to COLD Toronto, Canada! Oh my gosh. I have never been so cold (that I remember at least). Saturday was sooo cold that I only went out for about 10 minutes and it took me an hour to warm up. The rest of the weekend was just cold, which for some reason, I actually enjoy. It gently snowed Sunday and Monday in Toronto while Jorge and his team of experts and I had some great meetings. Wait 'till you hear what we're cooking up! Remember my goal of having Camp Millionaires all over the world?

I headed back to Paradise (aka Santa Barbara) Tuesday and was greeted by a sunny 75º. I quickly donned my shorts and took a nice long beach walk. To tell you the truth, I loved it all; the moist Caribbean, the rain, the snow, the cold. For some reason, aside from hard windy days, I love it all. I once read, "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad attitudes." I guess we could apply that to all aspects of life. Just somethin' to think about.

Ways to Involve Your Kids in the Family Finances

If you're a parent, you no doubt want your kids to grow up and be responsible for themselves. This means your kids must eventually graduate from learning that "this is a penny" to  learning "this is how you keep your pennies and make them grow into lots of pennies!"

The question is, "How do you do this?" Most parents have a difficult time talking about money with their children. Kids seem to want, want, want but when it comes time to listen to parents talk about how to get and keep their own money, the information often falls on deaf ears.

The answer to this question is, "Include them in the family's financial life from an early age so they understand what it takes to successfully run a household and support a family."money

One of the three primary mistakes parents make is that they don't talk to their kids about money. Teens get to be 18, move out of the house, are either handed a checkbook or get one on their own, and have virtually no idea what is involved with financing their new life.

To fix this oversight, all you have to do is involve your child in everything the family does with money. Though many parents don't want to 'bother' their children with the family finances and the topic of money, leaving them out of the picture is a huge disservice to them. A financially clueless adult is a helpless adult. Not something you want to do to your kids.

Here's several ways you can involve your children in the family's finances so they are prepared to handle money wisely when they move out on their own:

  • Have them help you open and scrutinize household's bills and then let pay them by writing checks or paying online.

  • Let them help you review your credit card statements, showing them the charges, fees, interest, etc. Talk about what you purchased and whether it would have been better to have used cash, whether you can pay it in full or not and the ramifications of all of the options.
  • Pay them actually read the back page of a credit card statement!

  • Enroll your children in helping you pay your rent and/or mortgage payments so they can see what it costs to have a roof over their heads every month.

  • Take your children with you when you visit your accountant, attorney, financial planner or advisor. This way they can see how important it is to develop a team of consultants and advisors to help you stay on track and plan your financial future.

  • Plan expenditures with your kids. Let saving for a vacation or larger purchase be a family affair. This way your kids aren't being forced to cut back; they are actually part of the plan and feel like an active participant. They will also appreciate the trip or purchase more if they participated in creating it.

  • Once or twice a year, have the kids help you either create or revisit the family budget. Again, this allows your children to be a part of the household, not just a recipient of money and stuff all year round. This gives them practice so they can start creating and evaluating their own budgets.

  • Lastly, give your children an allowance! And not just your ordinary allowance tied to chores or grades. These types of allowances don't always create money-savvy adults that really understand how to make, manage and multiply their money wisely.

Instead, starting at around six to eight years old, give your children some of the money that you are already spending on them to manage; money for toys, treats, movies, hair supplies, lessons, clothing, etc. The older they get, the more money you run through them. The goal of this type of allowance is to have the child fully responsible for everything they need and want by the time they graduate from high school and leave home without you.

So ask yourself how you can involve your children in the family's finances so you can get them started down the road to financial freedom today.
