Amongst the financial turmoil floating 'seemingly' all around us (at least if we listen to the media which you know I suggest you don't) there is a financial industry that seems to be doing just dandy...the local bank!
About a year ago I switched from a very large institution to the most wonderful bank in our community, Montecito Bank & Trust, owned by Mr. Michael Towbes. Mr. Towbes is incredibly generous with community organizations and I wanted to support the man and group that had been supporting us for a couple of years. When I switched to MB&T, I had no idea there were so many charming benefits that came along with banking locally:
1) The manager of the downtown branch, Melissa McEacheron (pictured with me on the right), not only personally invited me in to the annual Community Dividends Event, where Mr. Towbes donates tons of money to local nonprofits, but she started the account for me AND get this: she answers my emails personally! What a gift and a pleasure.
2) Melissa and her friendly crew worked with all of our Camp Millionaire campers this summer and gave them tours of the bank and more. I'm not sure who had more fun!
3) And finally, it's just so nice to bank where people know you, want to help you, and are really happy to see you, even when I just drop off some brochures for our next Creative Wealth for Women program. Which, by the way, one of their employees attended last month and is still raving about to everyone. Thanks Jessica.
So if you're having any doubts about your current bank, I encourage you to check out your local banks, and your community credit unions. You're bound to find one full of friendly faces and helpful hands. I'm so glad I switched. Thanks Melissa and everyone at Montecito Bank & Trust!

The Language of Money:
A simple activity to help kids learn to speak 'buckish'.
How many of you have traveled to a country that spoke a different language and you didn't know that language? How many of you found it a wee bit of a struggle to communicate with others? Me, too. In Brasil last year I was completely lost. I learned a few words but I have to say I only remember a couple:
Cachorro is a dog and Obligata is thank you if you're a girl. So much for fitting in.
Anyway, in the light of the fact that people everywhere are trying to make heads or tails out of what's happening in our world of money, I thought I'd pass on one of the activities we use in our youth programs to help kids review the financial words they are learning each day. We call this the Language of Money. You can do this with your own kids and, if you're a teacher, it's great to use in class. I learned it when I took French (no, I didn't learn that either! At least, not yet.)
First, download this file. Print the pages out on card stock and if you have a laminator or have access to one, laminate the pages before you cut the words up into strips. This version of the Language of Money is from our Creative Cash at School Kit. It's not as comprehensive as our Camp Millionaire vocabulary or the list of words in The Ultimate Allowance but it will give your kids a great start.
Next, once you have the words cut up, leave them on the kitchen or dining room table, or anywhere else your family congregates (remember last week's advice of turning the tube off). Every day go over a few of the words. Have the kids look them up in the dictionary (it's the dusty, red book on the shelf) or online. If you want even more of a challenge, make a game out of finding financial vocabulary words in your local paper (if you still take it) or a financial magazine or two.
Spend time talking about the words: what they mean, other meanings if they have them, how they are used, why you might want to know and understand the words, etc.
Then, and now comes the fun part, you'll need a couple of very high tech pieces of equipment...at least two fly swatters and some masking tape!
Once a week, find a nice clean, uncluttered wall (home or classroom) and have the kids put all the words they recognize so far up on the wall with the tape.
Move the furniture or desks away from the wall. Put a piece of tape about 10-15 feet long about 6 feet parallel to the wall. Have the kids divide into two teams (hint: have them 'count' off using the words 'financial' and 'freedom' (instead of 1 and 2). Give one fly swatter to the person in the front of each row. For those of you with smaller families, feel free to recruit kids from the neighborhood.
Now simply make up definitions for the words on the wall. (Note: if there are two adults or teachers, take turns giving the kids the definitions for the words.) Make the definitions simple and straight forward, not complicated. The first person with the swatter to swat the word gets a reward. Make it pennies or nickels or dimes or quarters if you're feeling generous (fodder for more learning after the game!)
RULES: only the person with the fly swatter can cross the line. The people in each team help their team leader with the fly swatter. The first person who swats the correct word gets the reward. Pretty simple. VERY effective. Incredibly fun!
For a quick video of a calm round of this game, visit our YouTube site. I just loaded the video for you this morning.
Who wins...EVERYRONE because they are learning to speak what may be the most 'valuable' language of all. The Language of Money!
Enjoy and if you have questions, please give us a call at 805-957-1024. And if you want more lessons/activities like that, there's plenty more in our Camp Millionaire program.

Two years ago I had the amazing pleasure of listening to a gentleman named Noah St. John. He was a speaker at a weeklong presentation workshop I attended almost two years ago in Florida with a group called The Elite Training Program.
I know many of you have heard of affirmations...the positive, present-tense, personal declarations we've learned to say to ourselves in the self-growth industry to convince, i.e., rewire, our subconscious to help us create change in our lives.
Have they worked for you? Many say YES. Many more say NO. I have used them and taught them for years and believe they do have quite a lot of merit. However, when I listened to Noah, I learned a whole new concept...AFFORMATIONS!
Wow, what a difference a question mark makes. An Afformation is like an affirmation but it's in question form. What happens when someone asks you a question or you ask a question of someone else? You, or the other person, try to answer it, right? Well, this is one of the theories behind Affomations. And all I can say is that they work.
Click here to visit his site and check out his information and products. I can vouch for them 100%. Oh, and Noah is one of the experts on the bonus audios for the about-to-be released Creative Wealth for Women Audio CD set! I can't wait to interview him. He is so much fun. I think you'll enjoy his Afformations also.
Suggestion...Try this one out for starters: Why am I so peaceful and prosperous? What came up for you? Where did your mind go? Check it out.
Your video treat (sent to me by one of you)
